1. Girl in Sudan lashed 50 times for wearing a skirt - After just blogging about Saudi Arabia’s increased commitment to putting those accused of being witches to death, here comes another example of why the Islamic-dominated world is insane. This girl, Silva Kashif, was 16 years old and was lashed FIFTY TIMES because she wore a skirt! Let that sink in for a moment. Then ask yourself whether your own problems really are really all that bad.

2. Switzerland bans Islamic minarets – While I’m no fan of Islam, this population-driven initiative seems to just be a bigoted attack on free expression and has more to do with hating Muslims as people more than an attack on their demented ideology. If they wanted to ban the burqa, I’d be torn on the issue but at least I could understand it. This just seems to be bigotry, plain and simple. The arguments for this action aren’t even coherent.

3. Rick Warren Won’t Condemn Proposed Ugandan Law To Kill GaysYesterday, I blogged about the proposed law in Uganda that would put HIV+ gays to death and how it was linked directly to the The Family. Well now Rick Warren’s under fire for refusing to condemn this insanity despite having some influence with the guy pushing the agenda in the first place. Warren says it’s his job as a paster to remain impartial on matters of public policy, however, this is the guy who called abortion “a holocaust.” Though I suppose if 6 million gays instead of Jews died in the Holocaust, Warren wouldn’t have minded.

1. John Travolta admits to late son’s autism – It will be very interesting to see how this plays out since $cientology rejects the notion of any mental illness, autism included. Are the rumors of Travolta’s possible departure from the cult true? I think they may very well be.

2. Spielberg’s ‘Paranormal Activity’ DVD haunted? – C’mon Steve, you’re not that gullible, are you? I hope this is just a publicity stunt.

3. Atheist ads banned from Lucerne, Switzerland -

Rico de Bona, the person responsible for the infrastructure of the city, said, “Ads from an organization that motivates people to leave the church will not be tolerated here”

4. Insurance company loses lawsuit after discriminating against atheists - GuideOne Mutual Insurance Company was offering special benefits for churchgoers only.

5. Age of Autism has seen the latest UK report that invalidates their faith – And they reject it. BIG SURPRISE!

But rather than dispel such concerns the new report is more likely to support claims of a cover-up.

Of course it does. As I always say, the conspiracy theory is a favorite for the paranoid. It is a convenient answer when the numbers just don’t add up. It takes no real proof, and often the absence of proof is just proof it exists! And any scientific evidence conflicting with that belief system must to them be the result of a coverup.

Measles cases in Australia and Switzerland are rising

February 9, 2009

Yup, it seems no place on Earth is safe from anti-vaccine hysteria. Now the measles cases in Australia and Switzerland are rising like they have been in the UK. But Switzerland’s getting it worst of all:

Switzerland has been affected by measles outbreaks more than other European countries in recent years because of the relatively low level of vaccinations and the presence of educational and religious communities that decline vaccination.

The outbreak described here indicates that anthroposophic communities are an at-risk group, because many parents in these groups choose not to vaccinate their children with the MMR [measles, mumps, rubella] vaccine. Anthroposophy, based on the writings of the social philosopher Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), combines human development with an investigation of the divine spark found in all of nature. Anthroposophical doctors emphasize nature-based therapies that support the body’s innate healing wisdom.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Jenny McCarthy and her cohorts must be stopped!

An atheist’s right to die

December 12, 2008

A documentary about a terminally ill atheist who travelled from England to Switzerland for an assisted suicide has provoked outrage among theists in Britain. Such acts are illegal in the UK and in most Christian states, but are permitted in Switzerland. The current British prime minister Gordon Brown, a committed Christian who supported the invasion of Iraq, is opposed to any change in the law that would relieve the suffering of the terminally ill.

While some people believe the event was being exploited by the British TV channel to boost ratings, Mary Ewert said her husband wanted his death to be filmed in order to show that a terminal illness does not have to result in a painful death.

Indian censors say no to condom and yes to sex – By Bollywood standards, just the make-out scene in the new movie Hello featuring former Miss India and Maxim model Gul Panag is risqué. But what India’s Censor Board is really upset about is that in the scene, Panag and actor Sharman Joshi are fooling around and Panag’s character asks her partner if he has a condom.

Catholicism: The Cause of Needless Suffering – Washington state has a ballot measure coming up that would make it legal for doctors to prescribe lethal doses of medication for the terminally ill. Pope Ratzinger approves, saying people must accept death at “the hour chosen by God.” So I guess The Pope doesn’t seeks doctors or medical treatment of any kind, right?

Jeremy Hall withdraws his suit – Jeremy Hall, who had previously filed a lawsuit against the Department of Defense, has now voluntarily withdrawn it. Earlier, he had stated that he was denied a promotion and prevented from holding a meeting for fellow atheists. He had also received a death threat from another soldier. Those charges still stand. However, since Hall is planning on leaving the Army in the spring, he dropped the lawsuit (PDF).

Parents outraged by pro-Islam baby doll:

A doll some are claiming utters pro-Islam and even satanic messages has outraged parents in Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.

Well, which is it? Pro-Islam or satanic ? Or is this just one fickle doll? Well, it turns out to be, like with EVPs, just an example of auditory pareidolia. If you don’t know what you’re supposed to be hearing then you either just hear random-sounding noise or you hear something else. Listen for yourself here.

Lisa: “Don’t you people see anything wrong what Malibu Stacy says?”
Celeste: “There’s something wrong with what my Stacy says…” [Pull’s string]
Stacy: “My spidey sense is tingling… anybody call for a web-slinger?”

As I was going to Saint Ives,
I met a rabbi with seven wives.
Every wife had seven sacks,
Every sack had seven cats,
Every cat had seven kittens,
Kittens, cats, sacks, wives,
How many were going to Saint Ives?

Times Online article on the “ex-gay movement”

Another day, another preacher caught collecting kiddie porn:

A deacon will likely preach Sunday at Oswegatchie First Baptist Church in the aftermath of the resignation of the Rev. Merton E. Parks, who admits he downloaded child pornography from sites on the Internet.

DNA proves virgin birth in Virginia? - Just when you thought it was safe to go in the water–Shark Messiah! Amateur Scientist calls it Jawsus.

The Plant Liberation Front – Switzerland scientists there must now justify the ethics of genetic research on plants.

Death From The Skies! – Now available on Amazon and fine bookstores everywhere.

Skepbitch gets a personal tour of the JREF by James “The Amazing” Randi himself.

Ray “The Banana Guy” Comfort declares the economic crisis is a sign of the End Times! – I’m sure he’s not the only religious nut making this leap. And of course, when the crisis has abated (after the landslide Democratic victory on November 4), they’ll conveniently forget that once again, THEY WERE WRONG! But of course the real problem is that these religious kooks are looking forward to disaster and the end of the world. This is what Bill Maher’s talking about in Religulous. They want the apocalypse to happen and some will stop at nothing to ensure that it does.

AND NOW FOR A MOMENT OF SCIENCE:

Warming Threats To Tropical Rainforest Species – “Contrary to conventional wisdom, tropical plant and animal species living in some of the warmest places on Earth may be threatened by global warming, according to an article by University of Connecticut Ecologist Robert K. Colwell and colleagues the journal Science.”

Skeptologist Dr. Kirsten Stanford presents The Science Word for 10.10.09.
