Muslims in Mali protest against womens’ rights

religion killsAfter blogging about the outrageous new law in Afghanistan allowing men to starve their wives if she doesn’t submit to his sexual desires and the mass Christian opposition to a law in the Bahamas that would outlaw rape within marriage, here comes a new story about Muslims in Mali protesting a new law that would dare give women equal rights in marriage.

Tens of thousands of people in Mali’s capital, Bamako, have been protesting against a new law which gives women equal rights in marriage.

The law, passed earlier this month, also strengthens inheritance rights for women and children born out of wedlock.

And the amazing thing is that even Muslim women are protesting womens’ rights. That right there illustrates the awesome power of religion. It can get gays to fight against their own interests, blacks to fight against their own interests, the poor with no medical insurance to fight against their own interests. . .and apparently women to also fight against their own interests:

Hadja Sapiato Dembele of the National Union of Muslim Women’s Associations said the law goes against Islamic principles.

“We have to stick to the Koran,” Ms Dembele told the BBC’s Focus on Africa programme. “A man must protect his wife, a wife must obey her husband.”

“It’s a tiny minority of women here that wants this new law – the intellectuals. The poor and illiterate women of this country – the real Muslims – are against it,” she added.

AND THAT’S THE HEAD OF THE WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION?! The head of the National Union of Muslim Women’s Associations is against women’s rights. That is MIND-BOGGLING!

And you just got to love how without any sense of irony, she proudly declares that only the smart women want rights while “the real Muslims,” as in the poor and illiterate women (she said it, not me) oppose it. It’s also safe to say these are also the uneducated women.

Religion, man!

Greatest scam ever thought up.
