Child rapist defender Bill Donohue is quite predictably cranky over the recent Sarah Silverman sketch because he claims it mocks his precious and easily offendable faith. Thanks Bill for giving me another excuse to post the video you find so objectionable:
Catholic League president Bill Donohue responds as follows:
Silverman’s assault on Catholicism is just another example of HBO’s corporate irresponsibility. Time and again, if it’s not Bill Maher thrashing the Catholic Church, it’s one of his guests. There is obviously something pathological going on there: Silverman’s filthy diatribe would never be allowed if the chosen target were the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem and the state of Israel.
Here’s a reality check for Silverman: the Catholic Church operates more hospitals and feeds more of the poor than any private institution in the world. It also saved more Jews during the Holocaust than any other institution in the world.
First, it should be mentioned that Donohue is once again using his favorite tactic, the “you wouldn’t be allowed to get away with this if it was another religion” gambit. I’m actually surprised that for once he used the Christ-killing Jews in his example instead of Islam. Donohue has used this tactic so often that I really think this is his excuse for everything. When he gets a speeding ticket, he probably says that if he were Muslim, society would be outraged at him getting ticketed. When he defends child rapists, he probably says nobody would mind if he were Muslim. I’m starting to think the man has Muslim envy.
Of course, there’s also the matter of his “reality check” having no actual basis in reality, as PZ Myers illustrates.
Then the final point that I think is interesting is that all that verbiage to attack Silverman’s character and he never once actually explains why what she said is so offensive. Does Catholicism not preach charity and living humbly? Is the Vatican not incredibly rich? Would the money not be better spent feeding the poor? Where exactly does Donohue feel Silverman crossed the line?
