DJ Grothe named new president of James Randi Educational Foundation

The current and newly appointed JREF presidents

This story came as a big surprise to me. A little over a year ago, Phil Plait was named president as James Randi decided to step down and reduce his role in the day-to-day operations of the organization. And now Plait too is stepping down in that role.

And while I was looking forward to seeing the direction Phil Plait was going to take the JREF, I’m sure he’ll continue to be heavily involved and I have the utmost confidence in DJ Grothe, who I mainly know from his hosting of the Center For Inquiry’s (CFI) weekly radio show and podcast, Point of Inquiry. As for Plait, he’s allegedly moving on to pursue an opportunity in television. And we sure could use more skeptical scientists on television.

Upon accepting the position Grothe said, “The JREF is one of the world’s great skeptical organizations, with a proud history of promoting critical thinking regarding paranormal and supernatural beliefs. It’s a great honor to join the JREF team and have the opportunity to build on its success, and especially to work with James Randi, a hero of mine since I was a young magician.”

Grothe will take up his new duties on January 1, 2010.

Phil Plait also wrote about this on his blog here.
