Bill Donahue is pissed. It must be Tuesday

April 23, 2009

Professional Offendee Bill Donahue of The Catholic League is. . .wait for it. . .offended at a new movie. I know what you’re thinking. This is an old story. After all, The War on Christmas ended in December. . .and Religulous has been out on DVD for a while now. . .and Webster Cook and PZ Myers defiled Cracker Jesus almost 9 months ago. . . and the chocolate Jesus statue hasn’t been heard from in a year. . .and nobody even saw the movie Goya’s Ghost anyway. . .and The Golden Compass hasn’t been in theaters since 2007. . .and The Da Vinci Code has been out of theaters longer than that. . .and the ABC TV show Nothing Sacred was cancelled 10 years before that around the time Dogma left theaters.

So after protesting EVERYTHING already, what the fuck is making Donahue angry now? This time it’s the movie Angels and Demons that’s got hold of the stick up Donahue’s ass:

Donahue accused Brown and Howard of “smearing the Catholic Church with fabulously bogus tales.”

To which Ron Howard responded:

“And let me be a little controversial: I believe Catholics, including most in the hierarchy of the Church, will enjoy the movie for what it is: an exciting mystery, set in the awe-inspiring beauty of Rome,” Howard wrote.

Apparently, Ron Howard has far more diplomacy than I do as I would have told Donahue to grow up and get a fuckin’ life, followed by an detailed explanation of how actors pretend to be other people to play out stories that aren’t real and that if Donahue ever sees a moving train on a film screen, it can’t harm him because it’s only an illusion. Idiot.

Crackergate fallout -They failed to get PZ fired but sadly Webster Cook and his friend didn’t fare so well. Cook has been impeached and his friend Benjamin Collard is facing harassment and intimidation from their own school, the University of Central Florida. If you want to help fight this injustice, then register your complaint with the university’s president, John C. Hitt. Here is a copy of my message to Mr. Hitt:

I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the unjust actions taken by your university against students Webster Cook and Benjamin Collard. It is reprehensible for you to bow to the demands of political ideologues and allow your institution to be a tool for Bill Donahue’s harassment and intimidation tactics. This is a man with a long history of condemning anything he doesn’t like. Well, this nation wasn’t founded to please Mr. Donahue. That your university chose to value a cracker and the absurd demands of an angry mob over its commitment to higher education shows a sincere lack of judgment and a failure of your university to uphold its values in the face of adversity. I assure you that until this grievous error is rectified I will do everything in my power to put pressure on the media to keep this story alive, to personally and closely monitor your activities, Mr. Hitt, and to publicly criticize your university. We’ve got our eyes on you, Mr. Hitt. And we can be just as loud as Mr. Donahue and his drones. “

Adult Stem Cells Activated In Mammalian Brain -“Adult stem cells originate in a different part of the brain than is commonly believed, and with proper stimulation they can produce new brain cells to replace those lost to disease or injury, a study by UC Irvine scientists has shown.”

Record number of UFO sightings in New Brunswick, British Columbia
-Of the 836 UFO sitings in Canada alone in 2007, a record 24 of them were reported in New Brunswick, British Columbia. I’d say this is a pretty damned good reason to be remain skeptical of claims that UFOs are spaceships from another world. And let this be a lesson in pareidolia. People have pattern-seeking brains and you shouldn’t believe everything you see or everything a reliable friend says they’ve seen.

PZ’s latest comment on the Crackergate insanity

Town of Aberystwyth may end 30-year ban on Monty Python’s Life of Brian

-Yes, that’s right. There’s actually a town that has upheld a 30-year-long ban on “Life of Brian.”

Christian Band’s Guitarist Fired for Losing His Faith

-A very telling portion from the band’s official statement: “We as a band do not have problem with those that do not believe in Jesus, nor do we cast judgement on those that do not believe in Jesus. We just want to love on people like Jesus would and hopefully share a little bit about what he’s done and doing in our lives. We would call ourselves a Christian band and for that reason, we felt we couldn’t have someone in the band who didn’t agree with the band’s foundational drive.” Apparently ya do have a problem with it.
