1. Israel’s richest woman now claiming to be psychic – Businesswoman Shari Arison, who’s worth $2.7 billion, is claiming she can see the future. But I actually think this is a case where she actually believes she can see the future. Here’s why:

Armed with the insight gained through work with Florida-based psychiatrist Brian Weiss, a proponent of regression therapy and the exploration of (take your pick) deep memories or past lives, she says she is ready to go public with her visions and bring together her spiritual and business goals.

Yup, you talk to some wacky past life regression guru and the next thing you know, they get you believing that your own thoughts are messages from the future. I tell ya, if I had a nickel for every time. . .

2. Ben Stein, fresh off of his being fired by the NY Times, calls gay people pedofiles:

We have … an entire party, the Democrats, whose primary constituency, besides the teachers’ unions, is homosexual men and lesbian women. I hope it won’t come as a surprise to anyone that a big part of male homosexual behavior is interest in young boys.

And hope it won’t come as a surprise to anyone that a Ben Stein holds such ignorant views on gay people. C’mon Ben. It’s 2009. You’re not fooling anyone. It’ll be okay. Just come out of the closet, Ben.

3. Iranian leaders trying to get rid of social sciences

Ayatollah Khamenei said this week that the study of social sciences “promotes doubts and uncertainty.” He urged “ardent defenders of Islam” to review the human sciences that are taught in Iran’s universities and that he said “promote secularism,” according to Iranian news services.

“Many of the humanities and liberal arts are based on philosophies whose foundations are materialism and disbelief in godly and Islamic teachings,” Ayatollah Khamenei said at a gathering of university students and professors on Sunday, according to IRNA, the state news agency. Teaching those “sciences leads to the loss of belief in godly and Islamic knowledge.”

4. Weight Watchers is in bed with Jenny McCarthy – This can only mean one thing. I won’t be discouraging people from buying Weight Watchers.

monkey-thinking5. Chimpanzees Use ‘Tool Kits’ To Catch Ants

Chimpanzees in the Congo have developed specialised ‘tool kits’ to forage for army ants, reveals new research published today in the American Journal of Primatology. This not only provides the first direct evidence of multiple tool use in this context, but suggests that chimpanzees have developed a ‘sustainable’ way of harvesting food.

6. Eyeless, fanged crustacean found

“A species of crustacean with no eyes and venom-injecting fangs has been discovered in an underwater volcanic cave in the Canary Islands off the coast of North Africa.”

That is so freakin’ cool! That’s the most interesting fauna I’ve heard about in a while. It’s been named Speleonectes atlantida.

Rabbis fight off swine flu WITH MAGIC SPELLS!

August 12, 2009

Vodpod videos no longer available.

A group of rabbis and Jewish mystics have decided to take advantage of 21st century science while combining it with Iron Age superstition by boarding an airplane and flying over Israel while chanting magic spells and blowing their shofars (the musical instrument, you perv) in order to stop the H1N1 flu:

The flight’s aim was “to stop the pandemic so people will stop dying from it,” Rabbi Yitzhak Batzri was quoted as saying in Yedioth Aharanot newspaper.

The flu is often referred to as H1N1 in Israel, where pigs are seen as unclean.

Wow! Just wow!

Silly rabbis. Trix are for kids.

Two ultra-Orthodox Jewish newspapers make women disappear

April 6, 2009

This is quite the magic act here.

Two ultra-Orthodox Jewish newspapers have altered a photo of Israel’s new cabinet, removing two female ministers.

Now you see them.

And now you don’t.

Limor Livnat and Sofa Landver were grouped with the rest of the 30-member cabinet for their inaugural photo.

But Yated Neeman newspaper digitally changed the picture by replacing them with two men. The Shaa Tova newspaper blacked the women out.

Publishing pictures of women is viewed by many ultra-orthodox Jews as a violation of female modesty.

I think these people consider women in general a violation of their laws. Real journalists would never alter a photo in such ways.  These 2 papers have proven they have no interest in the truth and should boycotted for their dishonor.

Teacher terminated over marriage – A woman who worked at Central Catholic High School was fired because her fiance was divorced. Actually I believe that according to “traditional marriage,” there’s no such thing as divorce, meaning this would be polygamy, which is fully endorsed in The Bible. So what’s the problem? This is what happen, folks, when you give religion even an inch into the doorway of your bedroom. It’s only a matter of time before they start dictating who you can talk to.

Orac is nominated again for Best Medical/Health Issues Blog of 2008 – Maybe next year Age of Autism (though I doubt it). And Autism Vox was another nominee. Congratulations you guys and good luck.

ERV recounts the epic fails of Intelligent Design’s Christmas past

Another reason for the Religious Right to hate Harry Potter – Daniel Radcliff is an atheist.

The Happiness Myth – A review of Jennifer Michael Hecht’s latest book.

Hecht previously wrote Doubt: A History, which reminds me to recommend everyone go out and see the new film, Doubt, which I think is hand’s down one of the best films this year with brilliant performances by Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep. Who would have thought a film about skepticism would be a serious Oscar contender?

scientist-use-in-case-of-emergencyOrigin Of Species In Oceans Challenged

“New evidence uncovered by oceanographers challenges one of the most long-standing theories about how species evolve in the oceans.

Most scientists believe that allopatric speciation, where different species arise from an ancestral species only after breeding populations have become physically isolated from each other, is the dominant mode of speciation both on land and in the sea. The key to this theory is the existence of some kind of physical barrier that operates to restrict interbreeding (gene flow) between populations so that, given enough time, such populations diverge until they’re considered separate species.

. . .

Research by Dr Philip Sexton formerly of the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (now at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, San Diego) and Dr Richard Norris (also of Scripps) suggests, however, that this mode of diversification may not be as prevalent for oceanic creatures as it is for land dwellers and somewhat controversially, they assert that the above model of speciation may actually be very rare in the world’s oceans.”

Now of course we can expect creationists to claim this is proof that Evolution is entirely wrong but of course that’s just throwing the baby out with the bathwater. This is just a broadening of our knowledge of how Evolution works. Science, unlike religion, is willing to admit error and correct mistakes according to the evidence.

‘Missing Link’ In Spider Evolution Discovered – “New interpretations of fossils have revealed an ancient missing link between today’s spiders and their long-extinct ancestors. The research by scientists at the University of Kansas and Virginia’s Hampden-Sydney College may help explain how spiders came to weave webs.” And here’s a new transitional fossil for creationists to deny.

Now what you’ve all been waiting for:  FIGHTING MONKS!!!
